  • For those of us who remember the TV series M*A*S*H, McLean Stevenson's character Col. Henry Blake was heading back to the States, and Stevenson was leaving the series, when the writers and producers killed off Blake, using a helicopter crash, ensuring that Stevenson would not return.

  • She says that she's not on welfare, but she's using food stamps to feed her family. As I understand it, food stamps are part of the welfare program. She has three children who have disabilities, so she's drawing SSI, to pay for their medical needs and expenses.

  • During more flush periods, we Americans were chastised for not saving enough, and ensuring that we had an "emergency fund" for the leaner times. The pre-crash period (up until early last year) was when many of us bought new cars, flat-screen TVs, the latest IPods, Blackberries, cell phones, etc.

  • The closest astronomers have gotten to a response is the set of letters and numbers (in 1971, I think) punctuated by the hand-written "Wow!" in the margin of the printout.

  • I had recess periods up through high school, as well. It really is a time to sit down, have a snack, and catch up with friends and classmates, gossip, and unwind a bit from being in class.

  • From watching Animal Planet's "Dogs 101", about different kinds of dogs (purebreds mostly), I learned that Bichon Frisse dogs are supposed to be hypoallergenic, because they have hair, rather than fur. But I've also learned that the allergies come from reaction to the proteins in dander and saliva.
